Location: CA preferred, other location (remote) possible  

 

ORGANIZATION 

Founded in 2002, Transgender Law Center (TLC) is the largest national trans-led organization advocating self-determination for all people. Grounded in legal expertise and committed to racial justice, TLC employs a variety of community-driven strategies to keep transgender and gender-nonconforming people alive, thriving, and fighting for liberation. TLC celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022 and just welcomed a new Executive Director in January 2023. 

 

TLC’s experienced development team helps to sustain a budget of $8+M, funding all TLC programs and initiatives. TLC has strong individual giving (25% of our revenue), including hundreds of recurring donors and donors who make gifts of $1K+. (The rest of the funding breaks down as follows: 63% Foundations; 6% Corporate; 5% Events and Other). Major gifts are an area of growth for TLC. This role will largely collaborate with our consultant on major gifts, Director of Development, and Senior Development Manager. You will also work with our Executive Director, program staff, and Development team (6 full-time staff including Director) as needed.  

 

POSITION SUMMARY 

This new role will support the growth of a portfolio of approximately 100 top individual and family donors to TLC and prospects. The Major Gifts Manager will work closely with staff and consultant to 1) Help set major gifts strategy 2) Help deepen donor relationships through one-on-one communication and cultivation; 3) Grow giving from major donors; and 4) Provide logistical support for the major gifts functions of the department, including some events. A successful Manager will be engaging, outgoing, discreet, and detail-oriented, and will be effective at communicating with diverse audiences. In addition to these duties, the person in this role also gains a deep understanding of TLC’s programmatic work. 

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS 

Contribute to major gifts strategy: Give input on an annual development plan that complements TLC’s overall fundraising calendar, including projections to support annual revenue.  
 

Help deepen donor relationships, represent the organization, and connect TLC leadership with donors and prospects: Create and manage outreach to a portfolio of around 100 top individual and family donors to cultivate and steward along with the Director of Development and Executive Director, hold one-on-one conversations about TLC’s work and impact, gather information about donors’ interests and giving, and identify and steward donors to develop relationships with the Executive Director and Director of Development. Support donor fundraising leadership development and engagement (through annual crowdfunder, annual gala event, and more). 
 

Grow giving from major donors: Maintain a pipeline of prospects to cultivate and solicit, and existing donors to steward and upgrade. Work with prospect researcher to identify and maximize giving opportunities. Draft correspondence and put together information based on donor interests to cultivate and solicit. Coach solicitors and make effective asks yourself. Track progress and create donation reports as needed in collaboration with other Development staff. 


Provide logistical and administrative support: Help support at 2-3 annual events, including our annual SPARK gala. Monitor and reconcile pledged gifts by major donors. Ensure timely data entry and acknowledgment of major gifts in collaboration with Development administrative staff. 

 

REQUIREMENTS / WHO YOU ARE 

 

  • A Driven Fundraiser. You’re equipped with 3+ years of experience managing, growing and personally prospecting, cultivating, and soliciting donors, with successful results.  

 

  • Passionate about Connecting with Supporters of Trans Justice. You bring superior verbal and written communication skills and have proven experience and judgment in crafting donor correspondence. You’re adept at communicating clearly, warmly, and effectively with donors and staff.  

 

  • A Systems Person. You’re skilled at keeping yourself on track by creating timelines, meeting your own multiple deadlines per week, and reminding others about their deadlines to move the work forward. 

 

  • Commitment to Social Justice. You’re committed to a career with impact and aligned with TLC’s mission and vision. You bring knowledge of issues faced by transgender and gender nonconforming communities, and an intersectional analysis informed by values of disability justice, economic justice, racial justice, and gender justice.  

 

Not required, but bonus if you are also: 

  • Familiar with Salesforce.  
  • Familiar with the California and/or national landscape of individual donors supporting LGBTQ/trans/social justice causes. 
  • Familiar with leading transgender advocacy groups, leaders, and movements nationally.

The range for this position is $75,000-$81,000 (FTE with benefits), depending on experience.
