Getting to Know the Membership Committee
It takes hard work to make the membership magic happen

By Jane Narich

Our primary goal in the Membership Committee is to serve as the “welcoming committee” for new members, to ensure that all our members not only feel welcomed and appreciated for joining the chapter, but also that they feel that they are getting real value from their membership and therefore are eager to stay, to participate and to enjoy!

This past year with Covid has been really challenging for membership and many chapters throughout AFP have been struggling to retain their members. Webcasts and virtual meetings are great, but it’s hard to network and make new friends over zoom!

But without members... we can’t exist, so to combat that:

• We have created a New Members’ Brochure, which includes the full range of our offerings as well as containing information about all the committees and contact details.
• We have spotlighted our job board and our mentorship program and encouraged everyone to take advantage of all the chapter offers!
• We are upping our game on institutional memberships too – why not see if your organization could allow greater numbers to participate through an institutional membership?
• We are reaching out directly to new members to welcome them personally; nudging expiring members to renew and actively recruiting new members from our online events.

It's extremely rewarding to see our numbers stabilize and even grow and so much fun to chat with new or renewing members, who are often surprised and happy to hear directly from us and really seem to appreciate the personal touch!

Membership is a great committee, with a wonderful group of people – we feel like we are on the frontline, but are also privileged to work alongside all the other amazing committees in AFP Golden Gate – feel free to reach out to any of us – we would love to have you join us!
