FEBRUARY 2025 - BOARD SPOTLIGHT
Huong Cheng
Donor Relations Manager, Yu Ming Charter School
How long have you been involved in the nonprofit sector? How and why did you get into fundraising?
I've been in the nonprofit sector for about six years, with the last two focused on fundraising. I didn’t initially realize fundraising could be a career path! I had applied for a different position at Yu Ming but was offered the opportunity to become their Donor Relations Manager. It was a compelling fit, so I took the job. I'm passionate about helping mission-driven organizations grow and create social impact. I also deeply believe in the power of education and its lasting influence on future generations.
Please tell us about your current role and responsibilities.
My small but mighty team of three (including me) is responsible for our $10M capital campaign. I manage a portfolio of donors and prospects, supporting cultivation efforts through events, tours, and collateral. I also coordinate donor engagement, oversee campaign activities, and manage our social media channels to amplify our mission and connect with our community.
What are some highlights in your current role and in your career? What has been the biggest challenge?
The biggest highlight would be when our team secured a leadership gift that really helped build some momentum in our campaign given how small our team is.
Another highlight would be participating as a 2024 IDEA fellow! I felt very new in my role and my mentor, Marisol, really helped guide me.
The biggest challenge has been capacity given our small team. On the bright side, I’ve had to wear many hats in a short amount of time so it was almost like a bootcamp and I’ve really learned so much.
What professional knowledge would you impart to other nonprofit fundraisers?
Other fundraising professionals are so nice and always willing to help!
How did you get involved with AFP?
I worked with a consultant who recommended AFP as a resource for my professional development. After joining, I came across the IDEA Fellowship application, applied, and was accepted. The timing was perfect for me as a new professional. Once the fellowship ended, I decided to apply for the Board of Directors to give back to AFP.
What advice would you give to other AFP members who are considering becoming an AFP board member?
I hadn’t served on a board before, so I wasn’t sure how I could contribute or what it truly meant to be a board member. But I’ve been supporting where I can, and it’s been a great experience so far. You’ll meet members who are deeply dedicated to the organization and to supporting others in this profession—it’s incredibly inspiring.
How do you manage to balance your personal and professional life?
I’ve experienced burnout before, so I make a conscious effort to set boundaries between work and personal life. I try not to work outside of my designated hours and fully disconnect when taking PTO. Prioritizing my physical and mental health is essential to me.
What are some activities you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy board games like Splendor, Blokus, and Codenames. I recently joined a gym—though staying consistent is a work in progress! I love hiking and exploring food festivals, and I’m always up for a milk tea or coffee meetup. When the weather warms up, I enjoy gardening and playing pickleball.
What career goals do you still want to pursue or accomplish?
I want to be a Major Gifts Officer!
